On 16 November the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kevin Rudd, announced that an independent panel would undertake a Review on the future of Australia’s aid program, to be completed by April 2011.

I was honoured to be asked to chair the Review, and very much look forward to the task ahead.

I will be joined on the panel by four Australians with extensive experience and a unique range of skills: Professor Stephen Howes, Ms Margaret Reid AO, Mr Bill Farmer AO and Mr John Denton.

They share my enthusiasm for the challenge we have been set.

This Review comes at an important time, as Australia increases its Official Development Assistance to 0.5 per cent of Gross National Income by 2015–16.

The Review will recommend how Australia’s aid program can be as effective and efficient as possible. We will look at what the aid program has done well. And we will identify what should be strengthened in the years ahead.

We will be constructive, rigorous and frank in our conclusions.

The Review will draw on a wide range of expertise and perspectives on aid and development. We will consult extensively within Australia, including with government, non-government organisations and business groups. And we are eager to hear from academics, commentators and interested members of the general public. We will also consult with governments, civil society groups and other donors overseas.

The Review wants to hear your opinions and perspectives on the aid program. Written submissions are now open, and will close on 2 February 2011.

This is an exceptional opportunity for anyone who has views on Australia’s aid program to have their say.

We welcome your contribution.
